Kieren Powell Star Search

Kieran Powell, opening batsmen for West Indies visited the Foundation of Goodness in October 2013 to conduct a ‘Star Search’ programme through the Kieran Powell Academy with the focus of helping less fortunate people while also extracting local talent from a region of Sri Lanka that was deeply affected by the tragedy of the Indian Ocean Tsunami.

The target of the programme was to select the ten most talented cricketers through competitive play and then develop their skills further with the view of developing specific talent in the longer term.

Kieran Powell spent time with the 50 kids who were selected for the competition and also took the time to talk to star cricketers who have been produced by the FoG Sports Academy. Of the 50 finalists, the ten most talented players were selected as follows:

1. Kaveesh Dilranga / Dharmasoka College – Ambalangoda / Wicket Keeper

2. Chatura Milan / Devananda College - Ambalangoda / Wicket Keeper

3. Mahesh Sanjeeva / Sri Devananda College - Ambalangoda / Bowler

4. Gayan Dilip Kumara / Sri Wimala Buddhi College - Seenigama / Bowler

Each of the ten selected kids received a cricket bag with brand new equipment and the three month scholarship through the Kieran Powell Academy. Kieran also participated in some community aid work and took the time to speak to many FoG beneficiaries whose lives have changed through a variety of FoG activities from Diving Training to joining the BPO or opening their own business.

The Foundation of Goodness highly commends this wonderful initiative taken by Kieran Powell which shows a kind heart and generous spirit in addition to his skill and prowess on the cricket pitch.  We eagerly look forward to his long and successful career and hope to see him back conducting more programmes of this nature in which will assist and polish rural talent.
