Volunteer Placements

Volunteer activities can take place in the following areas at the MCC Centre of Excellence in Seenigama
Children and Education –

Computer Classes:  Assisting the teacher to explain course material, helping the students with their practical etc.

English Language Training: Helping the teacher to explain the course material through games and activities, conducting conversation classes with students and staff etc.

Pre-School: Assisting the teachers to manage the children during class hours and play time (please be advised that the preschool is not in session during the months of April, August and December)

Healthcare –

Medical and Dental Clinic: Observe and share value additions to the existing programme in coordination with the medical officer in charge.

Community Psycho-social Unit: Training for the Community Counselors to enhance their existing knowledge, outreach activities organised in coordination with the CPU Team including Elders’ and Children’s Homes etc.

Sport (cricket, ladies cricket, netball, volleyball, badminton, swimming, karate, table tennis, chess) –

Getting involved with the coaches and children during practice sessions, research new training methods and techniques and create a dossier of the findings etc.

Environmental management –

Research and teach waste management, recycling, environmental protection to beneficiaries and staff through visual presentations and practical programmes etc.

Women’s Enterprise and Empowerment Centre –

Special workshops on beauty care, dress making, cookery classes

*Any programmes to be conducted in these areas must be finalized with the consultation of the volunteer management team following the submission of the plan in point form

*Approval is conditional as per time availability and progress with course syllabus

Sustainable Income Generation Initiatives –

Research and present new sustainable income generation opportunities as well as value additions, publicity and promotional activities for existing income generation ventures.

July and December is graduation time for many of our classes as they end their 6 month long programmes. Therefore, please be aware that you may not have full attendance during your sessions if you chose to work with the students.

Additionally, please be aware that school children sit for end-of-term exams during the time periods mentioned below and therefore classes and  programmes for school aged children including at the Sports Academy may experience reduce attendance as the children will be focusing on their studies.

Mid March      -     End April (including the holiday for the traditional New Year celebrations)
Mid July          -     Early August
Mid November-     Early December

 

Each volunteer can join one of the existing activities or suggest one to be created while on site as per their areas of expertise in coordination with the volunteer management team.
