New Developments at the Sports Academy The Foundation of Goodness Sports Academy has always been very proud of its cricket and netball programmes which have a longstanding record for producing national and even international level players who have represented Sri Lanka. We are now delighted to see a performance surge from other areas as well, such as karate and most recently, table tennis. The FoG Sports Academy Table Tennis Team participated in the Western Province All Island Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship which took place at S. Thomas’ College in Mount Lavinia. At this event, young Diwya Chandraguptha who entered in both the U10 and U12 Girls’ Competitions made it as far as the quarter finals in the U12 category and went on to win the Sri Lankan U10 Girls' Championship. Fellow teammate Sanduni Prabuddhika who already has an impressive list of achievements including a South Asian Hopes Week and Challenge certificate from Karachi, being named the Junior Nationals Girls’ Singles Champion at the Chrys Gunaratne Memorial Under 10 & Under 12 and the Northern Province TT Association Girls’ Under 12 Champion, was able to secure the position of Second Runner Up at the U12 Competition during the Western Province All Island Open TT Championship. We are delighted to see these young girls stand out in their chosen field and are eager to see what lies ahead for the pair! At the same time, we would like to mention the special training our sportsmen and women receive with the help of those like Victor Celestine from Nigeria who conducts fitness training for all our players on four days of the week as well as the monthly coaching camps conducted by outstanding cricket coach Mr. Hemantha Devapriya. Giving a brief overview of his programme, Mr. Devapriya states; “(Our) advanced programme has been conducted with the bowling machine for Under 15’s from last year and we used the bowling machine for the students to teach them the back foot technique and this year we will work on different techniques. We have a lot of drill work with the ball being thrown down and each batsman plays the necessary front foot drive to it. In the afternoon, we train them in match situations. How to handle the pressure of match situations and mental toughness is also inculcated into the players. We make sure we have one and a half hours of fielding to develop that aspect of the game.” We would like to express our most sincere gratitude to Tokyo Cement who have made this possible through their sponsorship of Mr. Devapriya’s coaching clinics at the Sports Academy. We are also delighted to announce that the Bryan Adams Pool Complex now hosts groups of disabled beneficiaries on three days of the week who join us along with their trainers to advance their rehabilitation therapy at our pool. We are delighted by this opportunity to make a positive impact by aiding in their recovery. 08th June 2016 |
