Shelton Gunasekera Memorial Swimming Competition An annual event that gives our rural kids an excellent change to showcase their skills in the pool, the Shelton Gunasekera Memorial Swimming Competition is held in remembrance of FoG Founder/ Chief Trustee Kushil Gunasekera’s beloved father, who was the person to inspire Kushil to develop the village of Seenigama. This competition, which is being staged for the 10th time at the Bryan Adams Foundation Swimming Pool Complex, has been the starting point for many aspiring young swimmers from the FoG Sports Academy as the initial testing point of their skills and talents in comparison to their peers, and many young swimmers who do not feel confident enough to enter swimming competitions at a school or regional level can assess their own capabilities before competing on larger platforms. It’s a great event for swimmers to understand the stresses and pressures of competition, and overall it creates an ideal atmosphere for novice swimmers to develop coping strategies and winning techniques. Children who had their first wins at the Shelton Gunasekera Memorial have gone on to place at national level competitions including the All Island Novices Swimming Competition. This year, the children were divided into three houses – Laureus House, Surrey House & Bryan Adams House and their parents all attended in droves along with the FoG Staff, Kushil and Chief Guest Chirantha De Zoysa, to see how their kids would perform. The champions are as below: We wish all the kids the very best for their future endeavors and hope this event can encourage many young swimmers to become winners.
