Household items donated to Estate Communities

Household items have been donated to 53 struggling and poverty stricken families working in the estate sector by the Foundation of Goodness and this donation coincides with the commemoration of 150 years of the Sri Lankan tea industry. Although tea is one of Sri Lanka’s principle exports the estate workers are often amongst the poorest communities in the island.

The household items donation was initiated by Mr. Scott Walker from Australia who was directed to us by Mr. Bill Deutrom, a longtime supporter of the Foundation of Goodness. They had previously participated in the donation of household items in the aftermath of devastating floods in Sri Lanka when they helped affected families get back on their feet.

On this occasion, Scott had the opportunity to ship household items from Australia to be distributed amongst Sri Lankan families in need. The Foundation of Goodness was very keen to direct these items to the estate sector as they are among one of the most deprived communities in Sri Lanka.

The items that were shipped to Sri Lanka included 22-inch flat screen TVs, bar fridges, side tables, bedframes, wardrobes, corkboards, shaving cabinets, book shelves, mattresses, PVC chairs and padded chairs. FoG was able to secure duty exemption for these items through the kind support of the Ministry of Finance in consideration of the humanitarian cause, and we were also directed by them to the Ministry of Hill Country New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development who helped to identify the families most in need as well as providing the storage and delivery of the items once the shipment was received.

We were delighted to hand over these items to 53 families from the Sheen Estate and Madakumbura Estate located in Pussellawa (Central Province).  The families were overjoyed at the opportunity, and now have the chance to improve their standard of living through the acquisition of these items.
