Flood Aid - 2017
Sri Lanka has once more been rocked by devastation with the arrival of the south-west monsoon inundating the country with rain resulting in floods and landslides across 15 districts- the worst such occurrence in 14 years. As of the 30th May 2017, the Disaster Management Centre has confirmed that the death toll stands at 202 persons with 94 still reported missing. A total of 629,742 people have been affected by the floods with 77,432 people displaced. 1,505 houses have been completely destroyed with a further 7,617 partially damaged due to the floods and landslides. The Foundation of Goodness sprang in to action in the Galle region deploying two boats to assist in the relief efforts and distributing meals and water to those stranded by the floods. While the irrigation department has confirmed that water levels have begun to recede in the last 24 hours due to lowering rainfall, it is now time to step up the aid efforts to help people return to normalcy speedily. Having completed our first stage of delivering emergency supplies the Foundation of Goodness has planned further of relief activities as follows: Stage TWO:
We are deploying a team to get this task done speedily and will need to purchase a 5kva generator and water pumps for this project so as to enable continuous work even at night as well as enabling them to fill overhead tanks.
Stage THREE: In the long term we plan to help restore some houses back to a livable condition subject to the availability of funding from caring donors, just as we did last year. We invite you to join with us in our efforts to help those devastated by the recent floods rebuild their lives speedily.
