For the Foundation of Goodness, the 26th of December is a day of remembrance, one where we contemplate how drastically life changed for all Sri Lankans, but especially the coastal communities and their loved ones who lost so much on that fateful day.
2019 marks 15 years since those devastating events of 2004. Our staff and students gathered at the MCC Centre of Excellence where they lit oil lamps and laid flowers before the name list of the 120 people from Seenigama who lost their lives, and a sombre procession lead by young students made their way to the Seenigama Temple where everyone had run to in panic, 15 years ago, in order to save their lives from the deadly wave.
A special commemoration programme was held at the Seenigama Temple following which 333 School packs were handed over to children from the village and its surroundings. There was a sense of coming full circle as on the morning of the 26th in 2004 a similar group of children had been gathered at the Foundation of Goodness to receive school supplies when the tsunami struck, and they were forced to run for their lives.
Looking back, we are immeasurably grateful for the countless volunteers, sponsors, donors and supporters who rallied together to help us rise up, and rebuild the village of Seenigama stronger and better. It is a testament to how much good we are capable of when humanity comes together for a greater cause.
