This years’ theme for International Women’s Day, “break the bias” encompasses the uphill struggle that women in Sri Lanka and around the world face everyday, having to challenge stereotypes, discrimination and abuse. This situation only worsens in rural Sri Lanka, where family obligations and societal pressure prevent many girls and women from following their dreams.

The Foundation of Goodness’ women’s empowerment initiatives aim to break these biases and provide new and equal opportunities for girls and women from rural Sri Lanka to learn new skills and reach their full potential. Countless success stories of women who have become divers, entrepreneurs, technicians, chefs and more account for the potential and talent of our beneficiaries.

The Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres across the island celebrated International Women’s Day 2022 with several programmes. They held graduation ceremonies for women who had completed our empowerment courses, speeches by inspirational women in each locality, awareness programmes, games, competitions, performances and more.

The OYOB Centre of Excellence in Seenigama celebrated International Women’s Day with a series of educational workshops, a beauty culture course demonstration and discussed the success of past students. The students of the food processing course also had a mini stall, where they were able to sell their products at the Centre. The women’s empowerment centre in Seenigama has empowered over 5400 rural women.

In lieu of Women’s Day 2022, the Foundation of Goodness introduced the Women’s Entrepreneurship Contest open to all female teachers, staff and students (past and present) of the Foundation of Goodness. This initiative is our long term commitment to ensuring that our beneficiaries receive better opportunities.

The Foundation of Goodness strives to empower rural Sri Lankan women not just today, but everyday. Over the years we have empowered over 7200 rural women to better their lives.
