Tree Planting and Conservation Efforts

The Foundation of Goodness believes in the importance of protecting and conserving the environment for future generations. Therefore, an important aspect of our holistic rural development model includes environmental initiatives such as the Goodness Agriculture Initiative, tree planting, rainwater harvesting and recycling. 

Our newest initiative began due to the proactive stance and support of Prof. Asoka Mendis and Ms. Janine Mendis on safeguarding our environment by donating towards the planting of trees at our Centres and surrounding areas every month on the full moon Poya day, which is dedicated to spiritual activity.

In January on Duruthu Full Moon Poya Day, the Udumulla VHE Centre in the Galle District planted and distributed 28 plants among villagers and staff. This included tree saplings of Rose Apples, Uguressa, Pomegranate, Ceylon Olive, Guava, Mango, Star Fruit, Orange, Banana, Kubuk and Jasmine. 

In February, 54 tree saplings were planted and distributed by the Rathgama Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centre in Galle, in lieu of Navam Full Moon Poya Day. This included the distribution of Jasmine, Nelli, Mee, Kos, Na, Mango, Narang, Guava, Magul Karanda, Kumbuk and Coconut tree saplings to the Kakukanda Temple, G/ Devapathiraja National College and VHE Centre Staff. 

March saw the distribution of 47 plants to the Udagama Temple (Buttala), Monaragala Royal College, Buttala Dutugemunu College, Buttala Divisional Secretariat and the Monaragala Divisional Secretariat by the Monragala VHE Centre. Jack Fruit, Orange, Mango, Guava, Mango (Vilad), Mango (Tom EJC), Coconut and Pomegranate tree saplings were planted on Poya Day. 

We hope month by month to contribute towards the overall upliftment of the environment across Sri Lanka, creating a greener tomorrow to combat rising air pollution as a result of human activity while also raising the next generation of conservationists from among our VHE Centre members.
