The Agri-Entrepreneurship Project in Thirukkovil, Ampara launched with the support of the ‘All You Need Is Love’ fundraiser (organised by BP de Silva Group, Singapore), together with Red Cross Singapore is now reaping its first bountiful harvest.
This project primarily aims to empower women-headed families in terms of sustainable livelihood, whilst also ensuring long-term food security. Thus, it is carried out by a group of seven women benefitting their families of around 40 to 50 rural villagers in the area.
It is not easy to cultivate successfully under harsh conditions such as limited access to water and it is especially challenging for women to engage in farming in the absence of childcare support. All these ladies have past experience in farming and had ambitions of having their own agricultural plots, but were unable to accomplish these dreams due to their financial struggles. Now, supporting each other and sharing the risks and challenges together, these courageous women are able to farm their own plots to reap a bountiful harvest!
The Foundation of Goodness believes in empowering rural women to reach their full potential through means of entrepreneurship, be it in specialized fields such as beauty culture, fashion designing, food and bakery, as well as agriculture for a better tomorrow!
