The first Village Heartbeat opened in 2007 in Udumulla (approx. 2 km further towards Hikkaduwa from Seenigama), a small and poverty-stricken rural village near Hikkaduwa. A library, a computer training centre, English teaching and women’s empowerment and volunteer expertise oriented programmes form the core of the Village Heartbeat.
The volunteer cottage which is situated within the Centre is a beautiful spot by the river, but is kind of isolated with limited activities and people only during day time. There will only be the watchman for company during other times who is not quite conversant in English. Guests do find this location a bit too lonely and opt for other accommodation. We generally recommend for at least two people to stay together.
Room only – US $15
You can either purchase the provisions from the Hikkaduwa town (which is about a 20 minutes’ walk or Rs. 100 for a Tuk-Tuk from the VHE centre) and prepare it yourself or eat at a roadside restaurant where the food is reasonably priced. Recommended for a group of two or more volunteers rather than an individual.
