Skipping for Charity: British School in Colombo Skipathon In a heartwarming gesture the British School of Colombo organized a skipathon to raise funds for the Foundation of Goodness. Inspired by Sir Ian Botham’s announcement that he will walk 160 kilometres from Mankulam in the North to Seenigama in the South through Beefy’s Big Sri Lanka Walk http://www.beefysbigsrilankawalk.com/ to raise funds for the Foundation of Goodness and the Laureus Sport for Good initiative, the students of British school decided to follow in the footsteps of this legendary cricketer and raise funds for a good cause. It was a story of kids helping kids as the British School of Colombo (BSC) organized a skipathon, and none were too young to participate. Enthusiastic little students between the ages of 5 and 11 years eagerly took part in this activity in an attempt to raise funds to help other children in Sri Lanka who were not as fortunate as they were. Alex, the teacher in charge of Physical Education at BSC was passionate about the benefits of sports, and wanted the kids to get involved in a physical activity that they could immerse themselves in which would also help disadvantaged communities, bringing out yet another aspect of the spirit of sports and how it can develop the lives of children everywhere, regardless of the multitude of social and financial obstacles that may lie in their path. In a wonderfully organized event which was supported by the school principal, parents and teachers, on the morning of Friday the 13th of September, the BSC kids skipped nonstop class by class, eager to do all they could to help raise funds. They were energetically and enthusiastically urged on by their teachers and PE coaches who motivated them every step of the way, encouraging them to skip just a little bit more or a little bit longer so they could give it their all. FoG founder/ Chief Trustee Mr. Kushil Gunasekera who was present at the event was incredibly moved on seeing the extremely young students work so hard to make a difference in the world. Such care, commitment and community spirit displayed by the very young and upcoming generation was a heartwarming sight that shored up faith in the future. The money raised from this event will be divided between Foundation of Goodness sports development initiatives (where it will help young children in the rural Seenigama region discover and develop their talents through the FoG Sports Academy) and the Laureus Sports Global Grants Programme. The Foundation of Goodness is deeply moved and grateful of this inspiring work carried out by the principal, teachers, parents and most importantly, the students of British School. We wish them all the very best of luck in all future endeavors and hope we have the good fortune to work with BSC more and more in the future.
The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others. -- DeAnn Hollis
