50 Solar Lanterns Donated The Foundation of Goodness donated 50 solar powered lanterns to beneficiaries in rural villages during a visit to the North in January 2014. Many of the interior villages in the North still have limited or no access to electricity. Even in villages with access to electricity, many of the people cannot afford the electrical installation and wiring costs.
Therefore the advantages of distributing solar powered lanterns to these villagers is manifold. On the one hand, it gives them access to light while on the other it is a sustainable, cost effective and an eco-friendly solution to the energy problem. The students of Al Diyafah High School, Dubai U.A.E. visited Sri Lanka as part of their community outreach programme and distributed solar powered lanterns to the needy. In order to get in touch with deserving villagers, they contacted the Foundation of Goodness through Ms. Neluka Wijesighe to facilitate a delivery to the North. Accordingly, 50 lanterns were distributed in the North to families from the village of Marathodai, Unchalkaddy in Vavuniya. It was a rainy day but everyone braved the unpleasant weather, in fact, the gloomy day lit up with their happy smiles. The lanterns were not even unpacked, and they were already bringing light to the world! The Foundation of Goodness wishes a hearty thank you to Al Diyafah High School for this noble and selfless gesture, and we hope to do more good work with them in the coming years!
