Dive Seenigama, Dive Lanka Water Sports Centre The Foundation of Goodness are delighted to announce that the Dive Seenigama, Dive Lanka Water Sports Centre has reopened for the new 2014/ 2015 season.
Dive Seenigama originated as a sustainable income generation venture by the Foundation of Goodness to sustain the Seenigama Diving & Training Centre which provides free of charge professional diving courses for the coastal underprivileged community in the Seenigama region to provide greater opportunities for career development and to divert local youth from the destructive practice of coral mining.
Dive Seenigama, Dive Lanka first opened in 2013 and was mainly operated as a dive tourism organization but as we commence its second year in the southern coast, it has expanded beyond scuba diving into a fully functional water sports centre.
In addition to its old favorites which include various single, multiple and night dives for certified divers as well as a Discover Scuba course for uncertified divers, we now also offer dive certification courses and a fabulous water sports selection including snorkeling, glass bottom boat rides, kayaks and rocket raft rides.
The Dive Seenigama, Dive Lanka diving and water sports centre officially opened for the new season on the 22nd of November in the presence of special guest, actress and enthusiastic philanthropist Kishani Alanki, but FoG’s celebrity trustees Muthiah Muralidaran, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena stopped by earlier in the month for a soft opening and enjoyed an afternoon on the beautiful beach where the centre is situated.
All profits from Dive Seenigama Dive Lanka go towards sustaining the Seenigama Diving & Training Centre which was established after the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami that devastated the Sri Lankan coastline. It was discovered that areas with high levels of illegal coral mining resulted in severely depleted coral reefs which were the hardest hit areas during the tsunami. Following this discovery, the government strongly enforced the law prohibiting illegal coral mining. When this occurred, one of the main sources of livelihood in the Seenigama region which had been coral mining and burning it to make quick lime came to an end. In order to provide livelihood training for the many villagers now left without a job and to prevent them from returning to this harmful trade, FoG introduced the Seenigama Diving and Training Centre which graduates up to 60 professional divers every year.
