U.S. Olympian Kim Vandenberg’s Swim Clinic U.S. Olympian, Kim Vandenberg, is a medal winner from the Olympics, Pan American games, U.S. National Championships, and World Championships and for the very first time she visited Sri Lanka to host swim clinics accompanied by Dhammika Withanachchi, New York-based coach and USA swimming official. Dhammika is a longstanding supporter of the Foundation of Goodness and has previously conducted multiple clinics for the FoG Sports Academy swimmers along with his daughters. Therefore, we were privileged to have Kim conduct a clinic exclusively for our beneficiaries at the Bryan Adams Swimming Pool Complex in Seenigama. The clinic ran for approximately 3 hours. During the 1st hour Kim spent time meeting with the swimmers talking to them about her journey and Olympic story. The last 2 hours of the clinic took place in the pool working on the four swimming strokes as well as diving during which time Kim observes, advised and corrected their performance. In addition to the Swim Clinic at FoG, Kim also conducted clinics for a number of schools including Richmond College, Mahinda College, Royal Institute International, Sujatha Vidyalaya, Trinity College and Hillwood College. Along with the Foundation of Goodness, other sponsors of the event included Aquafit, Hilton Clombo, Dasarath Kiridena, Richmond & Mahinda Old Boys Association- Australia, Derana TV and Jetwing Hotels. The opportunity to meet internationally acclaimed medal winning sportsmen, and to train under them is a true gift to these rural children, and we are grateful to that we were able to offer this opportunity to kids from underprivileged communities for whom this is truly the opportunity of a lifetime. The exposure to personalities such as Kim will not only improve the swimmers’ skills, it will also inspire them to dream big and broaden their outlook of the world.
