For 20 years, the Foundation of Goodness has strived to bridge the glaring disparities between rural and urban Sri Lanka. We have introduced many educational classes, including English, Mathematics and Science at the MCC Centre of Excellence in Seenigama, as well as our Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres across the island.
However, we also recognize that our beneficiaries have personal dreams that go beyond these basics. They long to participate in recreational and creative activities which add value to life from a different dimension beyond simply that of functionality and skill.
This is why FoG offers sporting and creative programmes, as we have recognised the brimming potential in rural Sri Lanka. High quality, consistent training is being provided free of charge to our beneficiaries for many sports, including cricket, netball, table tennis and swimming at our Sports Academy in the South as well as at a variety of VHE Centres.
We also have an oriental dancing and traditional drumming programme and now, we have also had the opportunity of opening up a whole new world of opportunity, with the introduction of the Renuka Malkanthi Alwis Music Academy, for aspiring musicians and singers in rural Sri Lanka. A small class for adults was introduced early this year with the support of Dr. Lankanatha Alwis, who has made this academy a reality, in memory of his late mother.
In addition to helping our students develop their skills, these classes also have a great therapeutic value for mental relation and wellbeing. The students are eager to work together with the ultimate goal of forming their own band and choral group which can no doubt be a great extra asset for FoG.
We hope to introduce a music course in all our Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres, allowing more rural Sri Lankans to achieve their dreams.
