There is a growing call for educational reform in Sri Lanka as the syllabus taught in many rural schools is failing to equip students to face the challenges of today’s world. Additionally, there are huge disparities in the quality of education offered at urban and rural schools, with rural schools having high dropout rates and discontent amongst the youth that already come from troubled backgrounds. Many teachers do not have the training required to reach out to these students, who also struggle with issues such as poverty, depression, stress, anxiety, bullying and violence which prevent them from becoming the best versions of themselves.
The Foundation of Goodness is a strong advocate of good values being included in school curriculums and has included values such as generosity, forgiveness, humility and discipline into the lessons that we teach at our Empowerment Centres. As the first step in this transformation process, we have now partnered with Learn for Life Lanka, starting at the source; our teachers.
Selected teachers from our Centres across the island participated in an educational and insightful one day workshop conducted by Learn for Life Lanka, where they learnt how to reflect on their own thoughts and actions, in order to build emotionally resilient students with a growth mindset through 5 core social and emotional competencies; self awareness, self management, responsible decision making, relationship skills and social awareness.
One of our coordinators Champa said, “It is a very valuable program for us and especially for our teachers. They treated us very well from beginning to end.We all actively contributed to the program. In the future, we hope to do something valuable and share knowledge through it. It’s a very different experience.”
We hope that the Foundation of Goodness together with Learn for Life Lanka can help bring about a crucial change in our curriculum, in order to ensure that more rural students receive the support and motivation they require to stay in school.
