We’re excited to introduce our latest Elders Care Programme to ensure the health and well-being of the elderly citizens in rural Sri Lanka, a project initiated by our Trustee Dr. Naj Nagendran.
We have currently introduced it in Seenigama in the South (Galle District) and Mathagal in the North (Jaffna District) as a pilot project.
In the very first month of the programme, over 200 elders in Seenigama and Mathagal benefitted from free health check-ups including blood pressure, blood sugar, weight, and BMI tests conducted as part of our Elders’ Programme, with some of the patients receiving referrals for additional medical attention from hospitals.
The FoG Community Psychosocial Unit in Seenigama is also supporting the programme by conducting awareness sessions which help the participants to understand the purpose of the programme. They are also introducing a variety of special sessions including mindfulness programmes, counselling and discussion programmes as well as art and music therapy programmes.
In Mathagal too, our team are adding some recreational activities such as keeping the elders updated through reading newspapers, playing games and engaging them in the community in various ways.
Through this initiative, we hope to keep our elderly citizens, many of whom are relegated to care homes, will receive the best of care that will help them remain active and happy members of society in advancing years.
