Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, yet an estimated 2 billion people globally still lack access to safely managed drinking water services, according to the World Health Organisation. In Sri Lanka, while 89% of the population has access to improved water sources, many rural and marginalised communities still struggle with water scarcity and unsafe drinking water.
At the Foundation of Goodness, we are committed to bridging the urban-rural divide and ensuring that even the most underserved communities have access to this essential resource. Thanks to the generous donation of Enoka De Silva, five families in Angankanda, Hikkaduwa, now have access to reliable pipe-borne water connections. Her contribution has brought a significant change to the lives of these families, giving them a dependable and safe water supply, which is crucial for daily needs like cooking, drinking, and maintaining hygiene.
Beyond the immediate convenience, access to clean water has far-reaching impacts. It reduces the burden on families who previously had to travel long distances to collect water, often from contaminated sources. By providing clean water, we are not only improving health outcomes—reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases —but also giving families more time to focus on livelihoods and education.
In addition to the new water connections provided in Angankanda, we are also thrilled to announce the successful completion of another project in Kengalla/Digana. Thanks to the unwavering support of Mr. Sidath Wettimuny, 10 more families in this region now have access to safe and reliable water through newly installed pipe-borne connections. His consistent generosity has been instrumental in driving these life-changing projects forward, and we are immensely grateful for his commitment.
With both projects now completed, the impact of these water connections is already being felt across the two communities. The families in Angankanda and Kengalla/Digana can now enjoy a better quality of life, free from the daily challenges of accessing clean water. By providing this essential resource, we are not only improving health outcomes but also empowering these families to lead safer, healthier, and more productive lives.
As we celebrate these achievements, we are reminded that something as simple as turning on a tap can make all the difference. With the help of compassionate donors like Enoka De Silva and Sidath Wettimuny, we can continue to uplift more communities and create a future where access to clean water is a reality for all.
