DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality
International Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year to commemorate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also serves as a call to action for accelerating gender equality and empowering women worldwide. It is a global celebration that highlights the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and the need for collective efforts to address gender-based inequalities.
This year, we celebrated International Women’s Day in remarkable fashion, in line with the 2023 global theme of “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”, where we installed a high-powered smart screen at the Foundation of Goodness’ state-of-the-art Women’s Empowerment Centre in Seenigama. This smart screen was donated by ‘Vanni Hope’ and Mr. Ranjan Sivagnanasundaram in collaboration with Dr. Bala Nalliah to whom we extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation. This collaboration between the North and the South takes our efforts to bridge the divide one step further through cooperation and working together, thereby enabling the rural communities of the two regions to keep up with the advancing technological and digital landscape, unitedly.
The smart screen provides beneficiaries from our Women’s Empowerment Centre with access to information on a wide range of topics such as health, education, financial literacy & entrepreneurship among others. It positively engages them to learn new skills and expand their knowledge base, which will ultimately lead to greater empowerment & gender equality.
The inaugural smart screen session at the Women’s Empowerment Centre of the OYOB Centre of Excellence Centre was held, introducing the new Women’s Jewelry Collection. The session also featured representatives from the Galle Chamber of Commerce who shared their thoughts on expanding the product range and reaching a more extensive customer base. We express our sincere appreciation to the team of professionals from the Galle Chamber of Commerce for contributing to make the inaugural smart screen session even more valuable by offering their expertise on market capitalization, which will be instrumental in helping our beneficiaries realize their full potential, with the new jewelry venture.
As we celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, we reiterate our aim to bridge the digital divide & ensure that no woman from the North to the South of Sri Lanka, is left behind in the technological revolution.
VHECs Empower Women on International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm across all our Village Heartbeat Empowerment Centres (VHECs) throughout the country. In line with the Foundation of Goodness’ theme of ‘Harnessing the Resources of Rural Women’ and the unique traditions of each community, the Women’s Empowerment Centres at every VHE Centre organized a range of engaging and empowering events to mark the day dedicated to all women.
The beneficiaries of our courses on Cookery, Bakery, Dressmaking, Beauty Culture, Women in Sports, and Women in IT, enthusiastically participated in these celebrations, which were informative, enlightening, and entertaining. Together, we celebrated the remarkable achievements of women, while also reaffirming our commitment to enhancing their potential and creating greater gender equality across the country.
