As we wrap up our six-month ocean care programme along 200m 0f Hikkaduwa’s shoreline, supported by PVH, we’re excited to showcase the significant results of our collective efforts. From a basic cleanup initiative, we’ve transformed into a vital force combating climate change and safeguarding Hikkaduwa’s precious ecosystem.

Over ten programmes spanning six months, 165 volunteers joined forces, meticulously gathering a remarkable 115 bags of rubbish. Delving into the numbers, our efforts yielded a comprehensive breakdown: 643 pieces of broken glass, 388 juice bottles, 1,085 wine bottles, 2,582 ground alcohol bottles, 1,986 beer bottles, 1,867 sea polythene items, 150 sea plastic cans, 931 sea plastic pieces, 319 ground plastic cans, 11,267 ground plastic bottles, 6,515 beer cans, and 860 energy drink cans.

It’s alarming to note that 90% of the plastic was collected from the beach itself, highlighting the urgent need for action. Our core objective, plastic reduction, remained at the forefront, with a total of 12,667 plastics collected, comprising of 89% plastic bottles and 3% plastic cans.

Despite the valiant efforts of our divers, the sheer volume of trash streaming in from nearby sources proved to be a challenge, hindering their ability to effectively navigate the waters and retrieve debris from the ocean floor. This obstacle significantly limited their capacity to collect trash to its fullest extent, despite their unwavering determination.

We identified a concerning trend of beachgoers leaving behind beer cans and plastic bottles, significantly contributing to the pollution problem. Moreover, irregular waste collection by the municipal council only exacerbated the issue. Despite these challenges, the dedication of our team and the support of the local community made a tangible difference. As we reflect on our achievements, we’re reminded of the ongoing journey towards environmental sustainability.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to this vital endeavour. Your commitment to a cleaner, healthier planet is truly commendable. Together, we have not only cleaned the beach but also laid the foundation for a more resilient and environmentally conscious Hikkaduwa.
